Music has an incredible power to transcend borders, lift our spirits and connect us across any distance. While we couldn’t travel physically as an orchestra, our passion for music enabled us to connect with others and spread joy at a time we needed it most. Our performance of ‘Jupiter’ from Holst’s ‘The Planets’ follows a special digital residency where we were joined by musicians from our NYO Inspire programme. Together we spent time connecting with leading conductors and musicians, practising performance techniques and explored further than our own four walls by inviting musicians of the world to join a socially distanced performance transcending space and time. From the moment we set foot on stage at the start of 2020, our mission was simple: to share music with a point to make about the world around us with audiences across the UK. As a community of young people, we wanted to educate ourselves and open our ears and hearts in support of social justice and racial equality, understanding there is work to be done, but knowing that as individual musicians playing our part in a collective orchestral whole, every person has the power and responsibility to make a difference.  This magnificent orchestral piece, Mighty River, by Belize-born British composer, Errollyn Wallen was our musical starting point. Exploring the history of the slave trade in Britain, it has spirituals and gospel music at its core. Alongside musical learning, we took part in a series of eye-opening webinars with expert guest speakers to learn more widely about Black musicians in our art-form and racial justice initiatives emerging in classical music. Find out more about the project here: https://www.nyo.org.uk/mighty-river Can you help us to keep delivering inspirational orchestral experiences to musicians who need them?
